Synopsis
Esperando al Gordo tells the story of Tláloc (Joaquín Cosío), an out of luck journalist, that has been threatened to death.
He asks two old friends, Arturo (Gerardo Taracena) a well to do shady lawyer, and Ernesto (Erik Zavala), a mysterious bachelor, to contact Gordo, an elusive acquaintance with contacts in the squalid and ruthless world of Mexican politics.
They meet at Ernesto’s house, a home where time stopped long ago. Aged furniture, old record player, paintings from a long gone era.
The friends have not seen each other since their college days and the meeting feels awkward, Tláloc complaining about the apparent lack of interest of his friends for his problems.
As they wait for Gordo, tension rises as they recall a tragic incident from their past.
Alexandro Rodríguez is an Academy Award Nominee editor of such films as Children of Men and Y Tu Mamá También. Always interested in becoming a director, working to get a feature in development, he wrote Esperando al Gordo and had the incredible opportunity to work with such talented cast as Joaquín Cosío and Gerardo Taracena.
Esperando al Gordo is a short film that seeks to give a glimpse of actual tribulations of Mexico through three characters that meet to solve the deadly ordeal one of them is confronted to. As one of the characters says, waiting for Gordo, is like waiting for justice in Mexico, it never comes. In a country ripe with corruption, where the justice system is routinely used to accuse the weak and protect the powerful, life seems to be constantly on a thin thread. Through a simple setting in one location, three characters and one scene, we hope to deliver a subtext that enhances the story.
