Synopsis
Following a night of heavy drinking, an art student comes face to face with the complexities of consent in her college sorority through her art.
ERICA ORTIZ is a Mexican-American Writer and Director. Her professional career began right before receiving her BFA in Film/Video at CalArts in 2015. In 2016 her short film MS. MATCH received special recognition at West Hollywood Women’s Leadership Conference and was the closing night film at LA Shorts Festival. Currently, she writes and directs short films and music videos in Los Angeles.
As our society embarks on the journey of untangling damaging gender dynamics, I am profoundly inspired to create work that investigates the uncomfortable complexities that come with being a woman in 2019. The Tampon is a short film that encourages conversation about consent. Upon reading this script, I was at a loss for words. The story on the page felt as though it was my very own. I knew other women would feel the same way. My goal with this film is to inspire deep thought and conversation about consent culture. In order to break down models that are damaging to our human experience, we must face and discuss the uncomfortable. We must take a sincere look at not only others behavior, but our own. As the protagonist in this film goes through her personal journey of discovery, it invites the viewer to ask the critical questions that we should be asking as we move forward towards a brighter future. I believe this film will make some women feel seen, and less alone within their experience of painful and confusing power dynamics. The Tampon at its core, is about a human experience that is all too relatable within our generation today. I am happy to present to you a story that inspires more discussion – which is what our society needs moving forward.
