Synopsis
SLUT is the story of a promiscuous ex-dancer, Jose, who loses everything in an act of infidelity. Desperate to escape himself, he flees to his God-fearing aunt’s in Ohio. As he navigates being queer in his new space—see: sleeps with the pastor’s closeted son—he realizes the depth of his “slutty” reputation. Back in New York, Jose’s best friend and singer-songwriter Emily deals with her floundering music career and relationship. Her girlfriend Dana can’t endure Emily’s white privilege anymore and asks for a break, leaving her with a parting gift, a succulent. Jose appropriately secures employment at a local dance studio, where he makes his first platonic gay friend ever, Demetrius. A moment of refuge is shared between the two as Jose finally opens up about what brought him to Ohio in the first place. Demetrius soothes Jose with the inarguable truth, “we’re all sluts.”
Madeleine Van Dam (Director) has found a new home in New York City, recently having graduated from Ithaca College. Her most recent film (pre-SLUT), Walk on the Mountain, has just finished its world-wide tour with the Banff Mountain Film Festival. She has a passion for directing and, as a filmmaker, believes that everyone has a story, as long as we take the time to listen.
