Synopsis
A lonely composer secludes himself from the outside world until he finds companionship with a young deaf female who lights him up with a mysterious, beautiful song.
Biography
Paphangkorn Punchantarak (DEE)
Dee is a new film artist, who began his career as a commercial art director in the creative department of an advertising company based in Bangkok, Thailand. After more than 10 years of award-winning success, he decided, in 2013, to migrate his career path to directing commercial films. A couple year ago, he realized that it’s time for him to go back to his first dream, which is a narrative film director. In order to complete his dream, Dee enrolled in the MPS Directing program at SVA where he is making his directorial debut film, ‘Silencio’. Dee hopes his film ‘Silencio’ can represent his character and style. He also believes that this project is a good first step that it’s going to bring him up to the next level of a filmmaker.
The idea of this film came up from my personality and the music that I love. My personality is like a deaf person who can listen to everyone, but never speak (like Anna and Michael.) Some people may complain or question about my personality or people like me, they think a quiet person has a problem, but actually, I think they’re people who understand themselves very well. They know what they want. Sometimes my voice in my head is louder than any words that I want to speak. Just listen to your heart not everyone else, so you will find what your heart exactly wants or what’s calling you.
In the silence, we always hear things. This is a metaphor of hope. Like this film, the definition of hope is the music that Anna wants to hear which Michael forgets. Some people feel valued when they find people inferior to them. I personally believe that sometimes we need to stay alone when we ’re facing this problem. Taking time to think in deep or fixing any problems. This film wants to send the message that life has full of abilities to do everything you want even the disabled people all has their own values.
Since I’ve been living in New York for 2 years, I have had many moments of loud roommates making lots of noise right when I want to rest. Moreover, there was a crack in the paint on the wall in my bedroom that I saw every day and I liked to imagine that, one day a swarm of insects would come through the hole. 2 months ago, my landlord came to fix it and repainted with a different color. Now, I feel better, but It’s been annoying me every time I see the white spot painted on the gray wall. For Anna roll, as a foreigner who English is not our mother language, I sometimes feel like a deaf person when I’m not able to communicate or explain what exactly I want to people who I spoke with. This is the reason why I used Spanish in the story because I would like to giving the film a different cultural context and adding another layer to the character’s communications. It will also force the audience to feel more like Michael and Anna in having to read subtitles much like they have to read each other to understand what they’re saying. These are the elements that I put into the story.
Finally, SILENCIO is the film that will inspire you about hope and miracle. I truly believe that these things are able to happen to everyone and it may come in different ways. The ending reveals to a little girl who appears beside Micheal, it represents to a magical thing that we can’t see by eyes or it could be a supernatural thing that makes the story happened even hearing of a deaf girl.
