Director Statement

Los Patines is my mom’s story.
She was one of the 150 million victims of child labor that our society is in denial of around the world. In every corner of the globe, slaves, adults and children are everywhere but we refuse to call it by its true name. These children fall under these conditions in a variety of ways either sold as laborers or running from violence or some, like my mom, who had no idea how their vicious story circle began.
Los Patines is a personal and poetic account of domestic slavery from a young girl’s point of view. This emotional and ultimately freeing journey sheds light on the sheer will and determination needed to rebuild a life weighed by scars of isolation, abandonment, and abuse.
As an Afro-Colombian and a woman, this story burns in my heart. In my country, domestic slavery affects a large majority of Afro-descendants. Our stories are rarely told and have faded into the silence of history. Through Los Patines, I seek to present one tale in an ocean of millions and shine a light on this deeply ingrained struggle.
