Synopsis

Joy in Music is a short music documentary about the joy of learning, teaching, and playing traditional music. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Mark Kohr, the film provides an inside glimpse into the transmission of cultural arts traditions and skills across generations.

Lucina Rodriguez, master artist at Los Cenzontles Cultural Arts Academy, guides teen sisters Divina, Camila, Belinda Ortega, and newcomer Cruz Torres in the recording of the popular Mexican song “Llego el Lechero”. Through their performances and reflections, the young students demonstrate resilience and growth that stem from their connections with community, family, and self.

Director Biography – Mark Kohr

Mark Kohr is an award-winning music video director who has directed hit music videos for Green Day, Shakira, No Doubt, Cake, Alanis Morissette and many others. His most notable music video “Time of Your Life” for Green Day affected a generation of young people. His career started at Propaganda/Satellite film where he worked alongside other top directors in the field including Spike Jones and David Fincher. He later went on to establish the production company “Bob Industries” in Santa Monica. Currently Mark lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his family working as a filmmaker and educator.
