Hailing from San Antonio, Texas, Daniel Maldonado found his calling for storytelling at a young age. After failing the 2nd grade and required to attend summer school, he would meet a dedicated teacher who not only helped improve his reading skills, but ,inspired him to write short stories which would grow and develop into a passion for screenwriting.
While in high school, Maldonado had access to his first camera, a VHS camcorder where he would shoot films on weekends with family and edit them tape to tape during after school hours. It was in those sessions that he would begin to develop a style and understanding of the craft and knew he wanted to pursue a career as a filmmaker.
In 2000, Maldonado landed his first production job, driving and washing police picture cars on the set of “Evenhand,” a cop drama shot in his home town. Of course, driving cop cars through your city at the daring age of 20 years old is a big rush, the spark for Maldonado was his experience on a real movie set.
For the next decade, Maldonado would go on to work on hundreds of commercials, music videos and feature films gaining real world knowledge on various facets of film production, specifically in lighting and cinematography, working alongside seasoned directors, producers and cinematographers from around the globe. This experience would drive Maldonado to a career as a Director of Photography/Director. Maldonado’s latest works include a short drama entitled “Strange Luck”, which screened at various film festivals and won a jury prize for “Best San Antonio Filmmaker” at the 2013 San Antonio Film Festival.
